Great Sankey High School Pupils Fundraising for Kenya Expedition
Twenty-six pupils from Great Sankey High School are embarking on a year-long fundraising mission for the Camp International Jambo Kenya Expedition, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity where they will take part in projects with lasting impact in one of East Africa’s most stunning destinations.
While in Kenya, the students will work on vital community projects, including tree planting, animal de-worming, and building key facilities to improve the quality of life for local people. They’ll learn first-hand about the challenges faced by rural women and participate in income-generating projects like bead crafting and papermaking using elephant dung. These activities not only empower the local community but help sustain long-term solutions.
A real highlight of the trip will be an unforgettable safari at Tsavo East National Park, where students will have the chance to spot wildlife like elephants, lions, giraffes, and zebras. They will also visit the Maasai tribe, experiencing their unique culture and traditions. Other adventures include a day hike through the hills, with views over the stunning Rukinga Ranch, and visits to ancient caves.
Among the group are best friends Kodie Rampley and Ellie Mullaney, who have been inseparable since their primary school days. Having shared classrooms and a passion for football since they were just four years old, the pair now look forward to taking on this exciting challenge together. Both students play for two football teams and have plans to join local children in Kenya for some friendly matches during their expedition.
The expedition comes with a cost, and each student needs to raise £4,330 to cover flights, accommodation, and insurance. So far, the teens have set ambitious goals to raise the funds, including a sponsored walk-up Snowdon next month and a quiz night planned for February.
Ellie and Kodie’s GoFundMe page has raised over £500 so far, but the team still has a long way to go to meet their collective goal. Ellie’s mother, Lisa Mullaney, shared her pride: “For them to be doing this together is lovely, and it makes us parents feel proud of them both. They say they can’t wait to play football with the children in Kenya and hope to make a difference to their lives by helping their community with the different projects planned.”
As part of other fundraising efforts, some of our pupils stayed behind after school to sell refreshments during the open evening, raising over £400—a massive thank you to all who contributed!
Other fundraising participants include:
- Connor Clayton (11), who has gained several different sponsorships,
- Harrison Todd (11), planning to take part in a Tough Mudder challenge,
- Isla Smith (10), who completed a sponsored walk,
- Kayla Stokes (12), selling homemade dog treats,
- Lucy Rufus (10), organising a teddy bear tombola in the community, and
- Zach Prashar (11), running cake sales and bottle-top tombola in the community.
- Additionally, Jamie Leicester (11) is planning a fundraiser evening on the 26th of October, more details will follow on the school’s social media platforms.
Great Sankey High School is proud of all 26 pupils involved in the project. Their dedication to fundraising and making a difference in Kenya showcases their determination to create positive change both at home and abroad.
Please keep an eye out for updates on our pupils’ fundraising efforts on social media.
