A huge well done to Rowan, Willow, Lauren, and Lucy, who travelled up to Windermere in the Lake District to complete their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh expedition.

This was a particularly special achievement as it marked Sankey’s first ever water-based accessible expedition, designed to support Rowan as a wheelchair user. The group completed the journey in catamaran canoes, demonstrating incredible teamwork, determination, and resilience throughout.

After a full day of training, the group set off from their campsite to the start point by powerboat before paddling their way back to camp. On the second day, they ventured out to a new destination by canoe and returned once again by powerboat. Along the way, they showed real curiosity and enthusiasm for their surroundings, investigating other boats on the lake as part of their expedition aim.

Their assessor was full of praise for their positive attitude and teamwork, commenting:

“Four friends (one with personalised support) participated in an October canoe expedition. The weather was cool and wet with occasional brighter periods. The team overcame the challenges of the late-year expedition and crossed the finish line singing.”

The assessor also highlighted their impressive navigation skills and determination in challenging conditions:

“They were adept at using the map and always knew their location, managing the details with precision. The team coped well with disheartening conditions which had a positive impact on the group’s success. Well done!”

This was a fantastic example of how DofE can be adapted to suit the needs of all students, creating unforgettable shared experiences and personal achievements.

We are incredibly proud of Rowan, Willow, Lauren and Lucy for this outstanding accomplishment — and we look forward to offering more accessible expeditions in the future.
