This week, Great Sankey High School celebrated Allies Week, shining a spotlight on our LGBTQ+ community and the students and staff who support and advocate for equality. As part of the celebrations, our Pride Club organised a charity cake and crafts sale, raising over £70 for TAGS, a local LGBTQ+ youth group. This donation will directly support young people in the local community, demonstrating the generosity and engagement of our students.

Allies Week builds on our school’s wider commitment to inclusion, following the recent achievement of the prestigious Rainbow Flag award for both Great Sankey High School and Barrow Hall College. This nationally recognised accolade celebrates schools that actively promote equality, inclusivity, and respect for all students, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

The Rainbow Flag award recognises the hard work of staff and students in creating a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment. From inclusive policies and awareness campaigns to extracurricular activities like Pride Club, our school continues to embed diversity and equality into every aspect of school life.

Mrs Donlan, whose leadership has been pivotal in driving inclusion initiatives, said:

“We are incredibly proud of the commitment shown by our school community. Allies Week reminds us that inclusion is not just an achievement, but a daily practice. Every small action—supporting a friend, celebrating diversity, or fundraising for a local LGBTQ+ group—helps build a culture where everyone feels valued and respected.”

Allies Week also highlighted the many ways in which students and staff contribute to a positive and inclusive environment. Whether through charity activities, peer support, or participation in awareness campaigns, the week reinforced the message that everyone has a role to play in creating a welcoming school community.

As we look ahead, Great Sankey High School and Barrow Hall College remain committed to maintaining and expanding these initiatives. Allies Week, alongside our Rainbow Flag work, shows that promoting equality and inclusion is not a one-time achievement, but a continuous journey—one that ensures every student can thrive and feel supported.
