Year 9 Student Luke Champions Dyslexia Awareness and Inclusion

Last week, as a school community, we celebrated Dyslexia Awareness Week, raising awareness, promoting understanding and recognising the strengths and talents of individuals with dyslexia. This week, we continue to demonstrate our commitment to inclusive practice by shining a spotlight on the extraordinary achievements of one of our Year 9 students, Luke, whose determination to make reading more accessible is truly inspiring.
Drawing on his own experiences of dyslexia, Luke recognised that many of the books he could comfortably read at primary school were aimed at much younger children. After discovering Barrington Stoke, a specialist publisher of dyslexia-friendly books, he experienced first-hand how accessible, age-appropriate and engaging reading materials could transform his enjoyment of reading.
Determined that other children should have the same opportunity, Luke completed a mini triathlon, raising an incredible £1,700. He used the money to purchase dyslexia-friendly books from Barrington Stoke, which he personally distributed to six local primary schools, helping more more children discover the joy of reading.
Luke's remarkable commitment to supporting others has earned him an Unsung Hero Award from the Scouts and the prestigious Gold Blue Peter Badge.
But his ambitions do not stop there! Luke is now developing an innovative app designed to remove barriers to reading. The app will allow users to photograph text and have it read aloud in a voice of their choice, customise backgrounds, fonts and text sizes, generate summaries and explore word definitions to develop reading confidence and fluency.
Luke also has aspirations to become a lighting and sound engineer in the film or theatre industry, combining his creativity with his passion for technology.
Luke's story is a powerful reminder that inclusion is not simply about removing barriers, but about empowering young people to recognise their strengths, pursue their ambitions and make a positive difference to others.
We are incredibly proud of Luke, not only for his remarkable achievements but also for his empathy, initiative and determination to ensure that other young people with dyslexia have opportunities to thrive.
Well done, Luke! You are an inspiration to our whole school community.
