At Great Sankey High School, we are passionate about fostering a love for reading, and World Book Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the magic of books and the joy they bring. Reading is not only a fundamental skill but also a gateway to creativity, imagination, and lifelong learning. Whether it’s discovering new worlds, stepping into the shoes of fascinating characters, or gaining knowledge, books have the power to inspire and transform lives.
This year’s World Book Day was a huge success, with students and staff coming together to celebrate in a fun and engaging way. Over 45 members of staff took part by dressing up as their favourite literary characters, bringing stories to life and sparking conversations about books across the school. From classic novels to modern favourites, there was an incredible variety of characters on display, making the day both exciting and inspiring for all involved. We even had Molly Weasley and Bellatrix Lestrange battling it out in a wizard duel in the car park!
One of the highlights of the day was our ‘Guess the Book Character’ challenge, where pupils had the chance to identify which staff members had dressed up as which character. This interactive activity encouraged students to think about the books they have read, recognise famous literary figures, and engage with their teachers in a fun and unique way. It was fantastic to see so many pupils participating and demonstrating their love of reading.
In addition to the celebrations, every pupil was given a £1 World Book Day Token, which can be used at bookshops and other participating retailers from now until 23rd March. These tokens give pupils the opportunity to purchase one of the specially selected World Book Day books or put the voucher towards another book of their choice. At Great Sankey, we want to ensure that all pupils have access to books, and this initiative is a wonderful way to encourage them to explore new stories.
As an extra reward for their enthusiasm, all pupils who took part in the ‘Guess the Book Character’ challenge will receive a free World Book Day book from the Learning Resource Centre (LRC)! We believe that reading should be accessible and enjoyable for everyone, and we hope this encourages even more pupils to develop a love of literature.
As you can see from the photos, World Book Day was a fantastic celebration of reading, creativity, and storytelling. We are incredibly proud of the effort and enthusiasm shown by both pupils and staff, and we look forward to continuing to promote reading for pleasure throughout the year.
A huge thank you to everyone who took part and helped make World Book Day 2025 a truly memorable event!
