To celebrate Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday before the half-term break, the Science Department at Great Sankey High School launched a Wildlife Photography Competition for students in Years 7–9.

The aim of the competition was to encourage students to explore the natural world, develop their observation skills, and capture the beauty of wildlife through photography—reflecting Sir David Attenborough’s lifelong commitment to understanding and protecting the environment.

We were thrilled to receive over 50 entries from students across Key Stage 3. The standard was exceptionally high, showcasing a wide range of creativity, technical skill, and appreciation of nature. From local wildlife to carefully composed close-up shots, every entry demonstrated real talent and enthusiasm.

After careful judging, 12 outstanding photographs were selected to feature in the school’s 2027 Wildlife Calendar. Choosing the winners was extremely challenging due to the high quality of submissions.

We are delighted to announce that the overall winner is Leighton (9LM), whose stunning photograph of a red squirrel captured at Lymm will feature on the November page of the calendar.

Our full list of monthly winners is as follows:

  • January – James (7HJ)
  • February – Oliver (8JH)
  • March – Amelie (7CK)
  • April – Anya (8JE)
  • May – Lewis (7KT)
  • June – Mehki (7KT)
  • July – Tilly (8PR)
  • August – Daisy (8FB)
  • September – Erin (9PW)
  • October – Erin (8AB)
  • November – Leighton (9LM) – Overall Winner
  • December – Theo (7AL)

It was also wonderful to hear from parents and carers how many students embraced the competition during half-term, spending time outdoors observing and photographing wildlife. This enthusiasm highlights the importance of opportunities that connect learning beyond the classroom.

We would like to congratulate all students who took part. The creativity, effort, and passion shown throughout the competition were exceptional, and we are incredibly proud of everyone involved. The winning photographs will be shared on our school Facebook page over the coming days.

Finally, this competition is a fitting tribute to Sir David Attenborough, whose work continues to inspire generations to appreciate the natural world and take action to protect it for the future.
