Today, Monday 11th November, Great Sankey High School fell silent to honour and remember those who gave their lives for us. Remembrance Day is a deeply important occasion, and this year our school marked it with a series of meaningful activities and reflections.

In the lead-up to today, students have had the opportunity to purchase poppies from our student ambassadors during form time, break, and lunch. The proceeds will go to the Royal British Legion, supporting veterans and those affected by conflict. We are grateful to all students who contributed and showed their support.

Students who are members of uniformed services and clubs—including Guides, Scouts, Cadets, St John’s Ambulance, and similar organisations—were encouraged to attend school in their uniforms today. At the beginning of period 2, these students gathered in the Memorial Garden at the front of school to pay their respects and represent their clubs, while the rest of the school remained in full school uniform. The gathering was a powerful and solemn moment, reflecting the significance of the day.

At 11.20am, the entire school observed a minute’s silence, accompanied by the Last Post, beautifully played by Mrs Cosgrove in the Memorial Garden. It was a moving moment of reflection for everyone, providing a chance to remember and honour the sacrifice of so many.

In the days leading up to Remembrance Day, assemblies were held by Mr Guatella, who served many years in the armed forces before joining Great Sankey High School. He shared personal stories about the importance of remembering those who have served, the impact of conflict, and the friends he had lost along the way. His assemblies were extremely moving and reminded students of the human cost of conflict.

Remembrance Day holds particular significance for our school community. Two brave former students, Private Thomas Sephton and Marine Steven Birdsall, gave their lives in service to their country. Their courage and sacrifice serve as a reminder of the bravery of those who serve, and we honour their memory alongside all who have fallen in conflict.

At Great Sankey High School, we are proud to teach our students the value of remembrance, reflection, and respect for those who gave everything for our freedom. Today’s moments of silence, the music of the Last Post, and the stories shared have made it clear that remembering is not just about the past—it is about recognising the sacrifices that allow us to live in peace today.
