Great Sankey High School student Luke, in Year 7, has been recognised on a national stage after being named one of just 20 young people across the UK to receive the prestigious Chief Scout’s Unsung Hero Award 2026.

The award ceremony took place on Friday 15th May at the Scouts Headquarters in Gilwell Park, located on the edge of Epping Forest, where Luke was presented with his award by the Chief Scout, Dwayne Fields.

The Chief Scout’s Unsung Hero Awards celebrate young people aged 4–24 who have gone above and beyond to make a positive difference in their communities through acts of kindness, courage and selflessness. Chosen from hundreds of nominations across the UK Scout movement, the 20 recipients represent the very best of Scouting values and community spirit.

Luke received the award in recognition of his outstanding fundraising efforts last year, raising money to provide dyslexia-friendly books for six local primary schools. His project has already had a positive impact on younger children in the community, helping to improve access to reading resources and encouraging a love of reading for pupils with dyslexia.

The event at Gilwell Park was a memorable occasion for Luke and his family. His sister, Poppy, also attended and enjoyed taking part in activities throughout the day, as well as listening to the inspiring stories of the other young award winners from across the country.

Luke also had the opportunity to meet and speak with Dwayne Fields, who shared stories about his expeditions to both the North and South Pole. Fields, who became the UK’s Chief Scout in 2024, is an adventurer, broadcaster and motivational speaker who is passionate about inspiring young people to challenge themselves and make a difference in the world.

As part of the celebrations, Luke took part in a video interview and podcast interview and was involved in official photography throughout the day as Scouts celebrated the achievements of all 20 recipients.

This is a truly fantastic achievement for Luke and one that everyone at Great Sankey High School is incredibly proud of. His kindness, determination and commitment to supporting others make him a wonderful role model both within school and in the wider community.

Congratulations, Luke — a very well-deserved honour.
